Hi Puppy welcome in to the crew here... Thats a tough question, and alot depends on the situation, How old is kitty, Kidney failure can happen as a chronic illness as well as can be a sudden event due to eating something he should not have. I am assuming tho your cat has lost 80% of its kidney function which is a very grave situation, one to discuss options with your vet. If I misunderstood and your cat just lost 20% of kidney function then forgive my misunderstanding and lets discuss more.
Kidney failure is a very common end of life issue for elderly cats, one of the most common. I have lost most cats to the same issue. On the other hand I kept one kitty going a few more years doing Subcutaneous fluids at home.
Much depends on the cause of the failure of his kidneys, and also on whether he responds to fluids. Sneakers did well for a few years but it would take dedication on your part. I think we found it earlier then with my other kitties.  He never accepted a renal (kidney) diet though. Tigger was diagnosed very late, or it advanced very fast either way by the time tests were run our vet recommended letting him go peacefully, which we did, With Freckles he was at the vets over a long weekend with intensive intravenous fluids, and just didn't respond to them, so we had to go the same route.(http://img90.exs.cx/img90/2365/k1ocray.gif)
Can you discuss it with your vet and other family members? Maybe you can get him comfortable for a bit longer and give yourself closure.
If it happened suddenly due to eating a toxin, again talk to your vet and see if you can treat him a bit and see if he will respond, especially if hes younger.
I am sorry you have to be going thru this. Let us know what happens and how we can help.

Thank you for your reply....We decided to put our wonderful cat to sleep....One reason is that we had to put my dog to sleep in 05, from kidney failure....I did what I was supposed to do ( out of love), cooked for her, (she also had irritable bowel), I had to cook for her at the end of her life....I guess....I didn't want to go thru that again....
Call me an awful person, that's what I am....I should have given my cat more time to live, never thought I would miss him like this....

Puppy never think your awful for thoughts you made.  :'(
Your dog was like my Freckles who didnt respond to fluids at all. He also had IBD, inflammatory bowel... before the renal failure.

Fact is if your kittys kidneys were down 80% probably kitty couldn't have had much more time, that decision is always a hard one to make. That is why a respectful relationship with your vet, respectful on BOTH sides is so important as it opens the channels to discuss things. I am sorry for your loss. We are in the process of setting the board up and have not yet moved and set up albums but we do have a rainbow bridge album on the MSN group site, as they are closing down groups we moved here, when we have our bridge album done I hope you will find comfort to add  pictures to  it of your kitty and pup.

End of life issues are too personal to question any one person's decision. You and you alone know your critter...even better than the best vet around. I still cry for my Maxwell who passed (with help) 12/29/07. He had sooo many issues and his organs were shutting down, he quit eating, oozing poop at all times. Quality of life. That's more than anything what made me decide it was time. I just could not stand by and watch watch him starve himself when he had no desire to live anymore. Dang that hurt and it still does. But his passing allowed three more rescued homeless critters to have a life with love so everytime I cry for Maxwell I look at the ones who are now taking his space in my home...never in Maxwell's place in my heart of course cause they got their own places now. I think Max would be proud! He was a rescue too.

Angle it might be too late at this point but do you mean 80% function destroyed and just 20% remaining?

In past for my babies I have working relationship with my vet, if there is truly just 20%  function its probably too late, but you could have vet try intravenous fluids over a few days to see if kitty responds but if not peaceful euthenasia would be best so they don't suffer. I would discuss with your vet, see what they recommend.

By the way don't permit advertising so removed that part of your message.
