Like the topic says, just as a backup to check your live Antivirus and antitrojan scanning.
Note many don't work in the Mozilla Firefox Browser, you may need to copy the link to Internet Explorer if FF is your default browser.

Good programs to DOWNLOAD to have your real time protection with links are:With
Spywareblaster, you install it, update it and then just close the program out, it runs silently on your machine, no scans with it.
YOU NEED THIS PROGRAM!! It does need manual updates unless you spring for paid version.
spywareblasterhttp://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.htmlWith Avira and Avast and AVG Antivirus programs you can schedule regular scans and updates even though they are free. Either of these will start with Windows. Remember run only ONE AV program on your pc at one time, but they are all compatible with SpywareBlaster.Avira:http://www.avira.com/en/downloadsAvast http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.htmlAVG freehttp://free.avg.com BoClean
* Destroys malware and removes registry entries
* Does not require a reboot to remove all traces
* Disconnects the threat without disconnecting you
* Generates optional report and safe copy of evidence
* Update automatically from a network file share
Run along side SpywareBlaster and your Antivirus (whichever one you select

)
http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.htmlFirewalls Make note there are free and paid versions, Free ones are very effective! These 2 generally get the best recommendations. Same as AV run only one at a time,
OnLine Armorhttp://www.tallemu.com/downloads.htmlor
ZoneAlarmhttp://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/home.htmTo sum up run ONE AV, ONE firewall, along with spywareblaster and I Purrrrrrsonally recommend BoClean as well to guard against spyware and trojans
I myself play around from time to time but keep returning to
AVG for my antivirus, and
Zone alarm for my firewall both free versions.
AVG has made some changes lately, making forums less apt to recommend it, but I still find it works for me, and last year I chose to pay for the paid version. I also use BoClean
I also run and maintain
Spywareblaster. I keep it in the start menu so its easy to check updates every few weeks.
